Tai Chi Exercises For Asthma Relief

Tai Chi (or qi gong in China) has a long history and has been used not only in martial arts, but also to fortify and improve one’s health. Tai Chi is used to treat allergies in China. Tai Chi is becoming increasingly popular in the US today, both as a relaxation exercise with benefits to your health and also for a fitness activity. The practice of Tai Chi brings together breathing and energy training, martial arts and discipline. This martial art of Chinese origin states that energy can be extracted and utlilized from the environment.

It is believed that this energy can be directed towards parts of the body that require it. While Western health professionals do not accept the theory of manipulating qi as a healing process, the positive effects of tai chi exercises have proven themselves in many clinical studies. Medical research has shown that the exercises of tai chi are effective in treating asthma. Asthma patients who engage in tai chi breathing exercises experience some relief from their condition.

What is to blame for an allergic reaction to something? An allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system recognizes an intruding particle as being foreign. The immune system then proceeds to battle against the particle, in order to get rid of it. It is the reaction of the immune system that is observed as an allergic reaction. The allergic reaction itself may manifest in the form of an itchy nose, redness of the skin or sneezing. How does Tai Chi help asthma patients to breath better? It helps by strengthening a patient’s breathing capacity.

Tai Chi consists of deep rhythmic breathing, which delivers air to all parts of the lungs. This helps to keep airways in good shape, preventing mucous from accumulating in the lungs and causing irritation to the lung tissue.
