Natural Remedies For Allergies
The difference between my allergies and those that affect many others is that mine can cause an asthma attack. Doctors commonly prescribe inhalers that release medications like albuterol to treat airway blockages. These inhalers come with possible side effects as a result of overusing, which can include airway inflammation or even liver damage. Even if they came with no side effects, I do my best to use safe natural remedies whenever possible, in place of prescription drugs. Asthma can be a life threatening condition, so it’s still important to have an inhaler nearby at all times, even when attempting to reduce your usage of prescribed medications. First and foremost, you need to know what the triggers are. Personally, my own take place from the middle of July into late August. Are they caused by pollens, grasses, do I care? Not especially.
I do know, however, that certain times during the year call for action on my part, to boost my immune system and start my allergy maintenance system. I have a wide selection of natural choices to treat my sensitivity to allergens, as well as increase my lung capacity. In some cases, Magnesium is injected intravenously to stop an asthma attack. Magnesium is beneficial to lung health and can be used as a supplement before your most susceptible period. Amounts used can be anywhere between 200 to 600 mg of Magnesium daily, but be sure to check with a Naturopath.
Some examples of foods that are rich in Magnesium are dark green vegetables and nuts. This particular herb has brought me great relief. It has natural antihistamine properties, and quickly relieves my allergy symptoms after taking it. It does induce some drowsiness and its duration is only about three hours, but it’s organic and has few side effects. I personally use a brand called Allertonic, which is available in all health food stores.
Pregnant women and women who are nursing should avoid using this, since it has been known to cause miscarriages. One allergy season, I noticed my airways becoming clear when someone I worked with brought some peppermints in to share with the rest of us. In my opinion, this powerful essential oil is more effective than eucalyptus and is much more pleasant to inhale.
As I expected, I found peppermint inhalers for sale in my local health food store. Another benefit of using peppermint to keep your airways clear is that it also has a positive calming effect on the central nervous system. This benefit alone can reduce your risk of an asthma attack, in the sense that it helps to eliminate panic. Also available are sprays containing part Eucalyptus oil, and these are excellent for applying to the chest before going to bed. While these are effective, they do come with a strong odor which I find somewhat unpleasant. When you have to be somewhere the next day, it can require a good amount of washing to rid yourself of the medicinal odor.
Still, it works very well as a treatment. Long before we rediscovered eucalyptus as a remedy, the Native Americans used it as well. Echinacea is a flower which is perhaps better known as purple coneflower. It possesses significant healing properties that fortify the immune system, even enough to protect against colds. It is used to treat patients who have hay fever. Its use overseas has been extensive, compared to within the United States. It has been regarded as a miracle herb by many herbalists. Similar to Echinacea, another more obscure herb is Goldenseal.
This particular herb possesses anti-bacterial as well as anti-inflammatory properties. Much like Echinacea, it is also believed to be a multi-purpose solution, since it improves the functioning of the respiratory system, and also the spleen, colon, liver, heart and pancreas. One endlessly aggravating fact about allergies is that inhalers cannot treat the itchy, red eye syndrome. Luckily for me, purchasing a little eyecup and a solution of Eyebright from my local health food store has alleviated my itchy eyes permanently.
This herb is an absolute essential for all people with eye irritations. In addition to helping with tired eyes and hay fever, it is also helpful for conjunctivitis. A single bottle of Eyebright lasts for quite some time, as it is thinned out with water to make the eye wash. I have also used Lobelia, since it was recommended as a strong bronchial dilator. While this is likely true, it caused my blood pressure to drop and caused some dizziness for me.
When researching the herb, I found that it can be a very dangerous remedy to use. In addition to causing dizziness, it can also induce low blood pressure, tremors, rapid heartbeat, and even death. Just like with any herb, always do your homework and research before you start to use them. I also think that like prescription drugs, taking them for long periods of time should be avoided. In past years, before antibiotics were available, silver was associated with potent anti-disease properties.
